Ex-Gov. Hiland Hall, 90 next month, has addressed a letter to his fellow-members of the Bennington battle monument association, advocating the erection of a monument of magnitude and grandeur, in opposition to that recommended by the committee on design, which was to be composed mainly of bronze statuary. The venerable vice president is able, at his advanced age, to make an argument so clear and pertinent, temperate in tone and vigorous in its English that it would have done credit to him when he was a quarter of a century younger.

The defeat of the Republicans in the late presidential campaign, is arousing them to the fact that they must become more united. The recent election in Illinois shows this to be a fact. In New Hampshire there is said to be less strife over the coming senatorial election than for twenty years past. A united Republican Party means success in 1888.

The Boston Independents are taking a hand in the appointment of a collector for that port, but they don't want anything, of course not, except to meddle with every appointment from a hundred dollar post office up to the highest within the gift of the president.

Mr. Editor: Will you please grant me space in your valuable paper to refute a malicious report (just circulated by certain persons for obvious reasons) to the effect that I am a rich "New Yorker," the president of a powerful Humane society on a large salary, and that I am not a "Vermonter;" all of which is absolutely untrue. Before returning to my native state to settle here for the balance of my life, as I have, I held the secretary and treasurership of a small charitable Humane association in New York. I have continued to hold the same since living here. This position requires my presence in New York six times each year at an executive meeting. I pay my own expenses, Vermont to New York and return, and while in New York on those trips, only being paid a nominal sum for looking after certain detail for the association. I am not rich, more's the pity. I am not a "New Yorker" and I am a dyed-in-thewool Vermonter. I have my only home here, and pay my taxes here and not in New York. LEWIS M. SEAVER

The Village of Northfield will apply for a Rural Development Action Grant (RDAG) in order to develop additional parking adjacent to the common area. The grant is being written with an eye towards developing additional parking spaces which are required in order to allow construction of a new restaurant in the now vacant lot on the common... Bob Sambol and Pat Bryan plan to open the restaurant which will offer lunch and dinner, and a private function room...The architect for the project is E.F. Wall and Associates, and Sambol said he hoped the restaurant would be open by Christmas...The parking lot will be constructed on property owned by the village which was purchased from the telephone company two years ago, with an eye towards the expansion of the common parking area.

Dr. Ciotti, hired for a difficult task by the board in February 1985, after a long and costly search now turns out to be "on administrative leave" at the request of the board. This information had to be deduced from rumor and minimal information provided by the board. When asked, the board did verify that he was in fact on leave and that at their request. The board, when questioned earlier, following several "executive sessions" to deal with "personnel matters," steadfastly maintained however that "no action had been taken." Putting a new school superintendent of 4 months' tenure on leave constitutes an "action" that parents of this district have a right to be made aware of.
