Edwin L. (Ted) Marsden, 71, Norwich Math Professor

Edwin L. (Ted) Marsden, Jr. died at home on Monday, June 7, 2010.

Ted was professor of Mathematics at Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont, and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.

Ted was born in Spencer, Massachusetts on January 22, 1939, the oldest child of Edwin L. and Dorothea Marsden.

He found his love of mathematics in high school and at the University of Massachusetts, earning his PhD in 1968. He taught at several institutions but made most of his career at Norwich. At his death he was the longest-serving faculty member, serving continuously since 1973. In addition, since 1999, he also was a faculty consultant to the Vermont Mathematics Initiative, helping to plan and implement a new state-wide math curriculum.

Beyond his professional life, Ted was a founding member of the Green Mountain Volunteers contra dance group and traveled with the group extensively. He loved and appreciated the New England dance traditions, teaching introduction to dances at Burlington’s English County Dance.

Ted is survived by his longtime partner, Phyllis Isley, his brother Peter and sister-in-law Cheryl, his brother Harry, niece and nephew Valerie and Bill Fitzhugh, niece and nephew Joanna and Scott Solfrian, nephew and niece Adam and Jennifer Marsden, and nephew Peter Marsden. A memorial service will be held on the Norwich campus at White Chapel, on Saturday, June 19, at 1:30 pm. Instead of flowers, family members, Capital City Grange, PO Box 208, Northfield Falls, VT 05664, or to a scholarship fund at Norwich to honor the best freshman math performer, in care of Dean Cathy Frey, School of Mathematics and Sciences, Norwich University, Northfield, VT 05663.
