Steven Ferris Denny, 60, Long Time Athletic Trainer
Steven Ferris Denny, 60, of 23 Crescent Beach Drive in Burlington died Thursday in the intensive care unit of Fletcher Allen Medical Center with his family at his side as a result of complications arising from a recurrence of cancer.
Steve was born April 25, 1950 in Northfield, VT, the son of Homer Houston Denny and Phoebe Ladd Denny. On April 14, 1977, he married Sara Whitney of Burlington. Steve is survived by Sara and their son, Jackson, as well as his mother, Phoebe Denny of Northfield, brothers David and Bradford, and a large and loving extended family. He is predeceased by his father and his sister, Nancy.
Steve attended Northfield elementary, middle and high school where he graduated in 1968 after distinguishing himself as a school citizen and stellar athlete, winning varsity letters in soccer, basketball and baseball in each of his four high school years plus two years in golf for a total of 14. He later attended Boston University and graduated from the University of Vermont.
Steve followed up a life-long love of athletics by becoming an athletic trainer in the Burlington area for 12 years. He later switched his career focus to education, received a master’s degree in counseling from UVM and worked as an elementary counselor and home school coordinator in the St. Albans City Public School System for the last 8 years. Throughout his school and working life, Steve never failed to live up to the motto he chose for his high school yearbook photo; “Patience is man’s greatest virtue.”
Steve also had a long time, multi-dimensional association with Rock Point School in Burlington. It was at Rock Point School that he acted as master organizer of a reunion for four generations of the extended family that will be long remembered. A memorial service for Steve, was held on June 13 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in Burlington.
