Nick Simon, beloved son, brother and friend passed away on Monday June 14, 2010, surrounded by his family. For over five years Nick fought the challenges of his brain cancer with courage, grace, fortitude, and hope.

Despite his illness, Nick completed his junior year at the University of Vermont pursuing a degree in social work and planned to mentor cancer patients upon graduation. He was a member of the Phi Alpha Honor Society.

During this time, Nick worked as a ski instructor at Stowe and at American Flatbread in Burlington. Besides skiing as his passion, he loved all outdoor sports including hiking, soccer, and golf. In addition, Nick had a profound love for music of all kinds playing both drums and trumpet as a member of the Northfield High School Band, the Northfield Community Jazz Band and other small groups in Burlington.

As a youth, Nick participated in the Boy Scouts and obtained the rank of Eagle Scout and enjoyed many camping and skiing adventures in Vermont and the western United States.

Even though his time with us was short, he traveled to Italy, the Virgin Islands and to many places throughout the United States visiting friends and family. In this last year, he enjoyed as many activities as possible with the unwavering support of his love, Heidi Considine.

Nick was an inspiration to all that knew him for his love of life and positive attitude even as he faced his terminal illness. He leaves behind his parents, Marty and Devereaux Simon; his younger brother Sam Simon, his beloved girlfriend and companion, Heidi Considine; his paternal grandparents, Buddy and Rosellen Simon; aunts, uncles, cousins, and hundreds of friends who will miss his gentle presence.

A memorial service celebrating Nick’s life will be held at the United Church on the Common in Northfield, Vermont on Friday, June 25, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
