Northfield Police Report
June 23
7:24 a.m. - Family Fight/Domestic - The department was advised of a family disturbance. Upon the officer's arrival he met with the female partner. She advised that she and her boyfriend had gotten into a verbal argument about who was going to get up and take care of the baby.
9:27 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Two concerned citizens came to the police department to advise that someone was missing. The officer gathered information concerning the subject last known whereabouts and personal profile. Upon completion, contacted Corrections and was advised that he was in the Barre City Lockup for a violation of his alcohol condition. All parties involved were advised.
Noon - Agency Assistance - The ambulance received an emergency call regarding a hiker on Paine Mtn. The Ambulance director requested officer response. The officer was advised, and then the officer was contacted to disregard. No police required. The hiker was suffering a migraine headache, nothing suspicious.
7:44 p.m. - Welfare/Suicide Check - The department was contacted by a concerned family member. Her sister and family lived in Northfield. The caller knew that she was in the hospital and wanted a welfare check performed on the children who were in a friend's care. The officer responded to the address given and observed that all was doing well. The caller was advised.
June 24
9:45 a.m. - Theft - The department was contacted by a local service station of a possible theft. The driver of a red truck had put gas in the vehicle and driven away without making payment. The company of the vehicle was contacted by dispatch and the bookkeeper contacted the service station to arrange for payment. The driver had tried to swipe a card but it had not worked.
2:11 p.m. - Accident PD An officer was dispatched to a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of South Main Street (Vermont Rt 12-South) and Vermont Route 12A within the Town of Northfield, Vermont. Upon arrival to the scene, I was advised that all parties involved were injury free. I observed very minor damage to the vehicle involved. No court action required. Crash report completed.
3:59 p.m. - Citizen Assist - The plaintiff came to the police department in reference to a final Abuse prevention order she had. She advised that she had not been given all of her property as set out in the order and that part of the property is a motor vehicle that is in the door yard of the defendant of the RFA. The vehicle is not at the defendant's address. Under investigation.
June 25
11:34 a.m. - Animal Problem An officer responded to the area of Water Street for a report of a dog running at large, unable to locate dog.
3:27 p.m. - Theft - The daughter of a resident of Northfield came to the police department to report that her parents house had been entered and items taken. The elderly couple are not at their home due to health and the daughter had come to check on the property and noticed items missing since the last time she had been to the home. The officers are investigating.
11:34 p.m. - DUI - Kimberly A. Chappell, age 42 of West Berlin Vermont was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Police stopped Chappell on Rte. 12 in West Berlin after they observed erratic operation and excessive speed by Chappell. While speaking with Chappell, police detected a strong odor of intoxicants emitting from Chappell's breath. Chappell performed the standardized field sobriety exercises and did poorly and was cited to appear in court.
June 26
11 a.m. - Fraud - Complainant claims she was a victim of a fraud/identity theft while she was a student at Norwich University last year (2009). A $200 loan from CashNet was fraudulently gained in her name, which she recently became aware of after receiving several notices from them for the debt.
11:32 a.m. - Found Property - An officer took custody of a brown leather wallet from the US Post Office. The wallet was
reportedly found inside the blue US Mail receptacle at the Post Office on South Main Street.
8:01 p.m. - Agency Assistance An officer responded to Berlin to assist the Berlin Police department with an underage drinking party, where a gun had been used. The officer initially assisted at the scene by looking for a female who fled on foot, then assisted inside the residence while waiting for the juveniles rides to arrive.
10:19 p.m. - Citizen Dispute - An officer responded to the Rustic Restaurant for a complaint of an unruly patron refusing to leave. The owner advised that he cut a person off due to him being argumentive and intoxicated. He advised that he wanted the unruly patron to leave but he was refusing to go. When the officer arrived the unruly patron had left. He was located by Berlin Police and advised to not return. A notice against trespass was issued.
11:42 p.m. - Agency Assistance - An officer responded to assist Northfield Ambulance with a medical call. The ambulance crew need to get the female to the hospital to get checked out and she was refusing to leave. The elderly female changed her mind and decided to go before my arrival on scene. I helped to assist her out to a waiting vehicle to take her up to the hospital. No further action taken.
11:47 p.m. - Threatening - An officer was advised of a threatening telephone call. The caller to the Police department had received a phone call from someone unknown that stated that he would be arriving at his house to shoot him. The officer is investigating.
June 27
4:29 p.m. - Citizen Dispute - The department was contacted by a citizen that was in
a dispute with a citizen in Waterbury regarding the return of her dog after an arranged agreement. The incident appears to be a civil matter. Under investigation.
8:21 p.m. - Animal Problem An officer was advised by State Police dispatch that a citizen had called requesting information regarding an ongoing animal problem at his residence. Dispatch advised the caller raised pheasants, and a neighbor's dog was harassing the pheasants and "hunting" them. The officer attempted to call the complainant back a short while later. There was no answer and no option to leave a message.
11:40 p.m. - Agency Assistance - An officer responded in Berlin off of Route 12 to assist an Officer at a family disturbance call. I assisted on scene as needed, and cleared shortly thereafter.
June 28
11:05 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - The department was advised of suspicious activity. The officer responded to the area and talked with the victim of unlawful mischief. Under investigation.
5:46 p.m. - Animal Problem - A caller from the previous evening called back because he had not heard from the officer. The day officer talked with him about the neighbor's dog being on his property and possible solutions.
9:08 p.m. - Family Fight/Domestic - Cassandra Mattison age 23 of Barre City, VT, was cited into court for simple assault. Officers responded to the Dog Wood Glen apartment complex for the report of a family disturbance. Upon arrival the officer spoke with the two parties involved. The victim advised he got into an argument with Mattison because he refused to help her move a duffle bag out of a closet. He advised she then grabbed his shirt, hit him in the leg and attempted or threatened to punch him in the face. Ms. Mattison admitted to grabbing and then striking and raising her fist towards the victim. Mattsion was transported to the Northfield Police Station for processing. She was released with a citation to appear in Washington District Court on Thursday August 12, 2010
June 29
1:03 a.m. - Phone Problem /Harassment – An officer was advised of a citizen receiving several phone calls from a number that was not familiar. The complainant had answered the phone but no one responded and hung up. The officer called the number and left a message. Shortly a young male called and the officer was able to explain to him why he shouldn't be bothering people by phone. The officer also explained the situation to the young caller's mother.
3)03 a.m. - Disorderly Conduct/ Noise – An officer was approached while on foot patrol. The complainant advised she had received a threatening phone call from her exboyfriend, who is also the father of her child. She was seeking advise on how to deal with the ongoing issues she is having regarding his behavior towards her over the phone. This primarily concerns issues regarding his visitation. The officer gave her
possible solutions and the contact for family court.
1:31 p.m. - MV Complaint - An officer was advised by dispatch of a motor vehicle complaint. The officer responded to the area.
8:31 p.m. - Agency Assistance - An officer was dispatched to assist the Northfield Ambulance Service. The complainant had called regarding her boyfriend who was experiencing chest pain. The patient felt that he did not need an ambulance. When the officer arrived, he was being checked by the ambulance staff. He was released shortly thereafter.
