July 18: Sunday at 3 p.m., VPT encores “The Buddha,” the story of the mysterious Indian sage whose ideas gave birth to a new religion two and a half millennia ago.
At 6 p.m. on “Lark Rise to Candleford,” gossip Mrs. Mullins discovers her daughter is pregnant and leaps to the conclusion that Daniel is the father.
At 9 p.m., “Masterpiece Mystery!” presents another new Hercule Poirot story. Agatha Christie’s Belgian detective meets a demon-haunted heiress who is convinced she has committed murder.
July 19: Monday at 7:30 p.m. on Vermont Public Television’s “Profile,” Fran Stoddard talks with Judith Jones, legendary book editor for Julia Child and John Updike, and “The Diary of Anne Frank.” The program will also air Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 and 5:30 p.m. It is available as video on demand at www.vpt.org, as well.
At 10 p.m. “Turmoil and Triumph: The George Schulz Years” continues. The series looks at the life and career of the diplomat, today covering the Nicaraguan Contra and Iran hostage concerns, the summit with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and the election of Corazon Aquino as Philippine president.
July 20: Tuesday at 8 p.m., “Nova” encores “B-29 Frozen in Time.” An adventurous team tries to retrieve the plane that crashed on a secret mission over the Arctic Circle in 1947. “Nova” also airs Thursday at 8 p.m. on the VPT World Channel.
At 9 p.m., the series “Lost Treasures of the Ancient World” continues to use detailed reconstructions and animation to recreate ancient sites as they might have looked in their heyday. Today, the magnificent pyramids of Egypt are the subject.
At 10 p.m., “Frontline” investigates the genocide in Darfur and asks why the world fails to act in the face of such atrocities.
July 21: Wednesday at 8 p.m., “Tavis Smiley Report” offers an intimate look at the lives of some of New Orleans’ most resilient residents, five years after Katrina. Filmmaker Jonathan Demme, who has been chronicling some of the hardest-hit neighborhoods, collaborated on the report. The report will also air Friday at 8 p.m. on the VPT World Channel.
At 9 p.m., “American Masters” premieres a revealing look at musician Merle Haggard, known for his distinctive voice, finger-picking and song interpretations. Having survived recent lung surgery, he has been hitting new artistic and commercial highs.
July 22: Thursday at 8 p.m., Vermont Public Television’s monthly “Public Square” special will look at the importance of the sport in Vermont, from the economic to the social side. The program will explore baseball teams and traditions, including the Burlington-based Vermont Lake Monsters, the state’s minor-league baseball team; the Vermont Mountaineers of central Vermont; and the Little League State Tournament. Viewers will be invited to call with questions during the show, and they can email questions ahead of time to connect@vpt.org.
At 9 p.m., “Timewatch: Young Victoria” reveals the tumultuous rise and early rule of Britain’s Queen Victoria.
July 23: Friday at 10 p.m., “P.O.V.” presents “El General.” Filmmaker Natalia Almada brings to life audio recordings she inherited from her grandmother, daughter of Plutarco Elias Calles, a revolutionary general who became Mexico’s president and dictator in 1924.
July 24: Saturday at 9 p.m. on “Sherlock Holmes,” the detective investigates when a young woman reports seeing a nightmarish creature at her bedroom window.
A 10 p.m. on “Austin City Limits,” New Orleans songwriter Allen Toussaint performs songs from his release “The Bright Mississippi.”
At 11 p.m., the performance series “Live From the Artists Den” continues to showcase outstanding musicians in unusual venues. Today, soul star Corinne Bailey Rae sings songs from her new release at New York’s Hiro Ballroom.
