High School Graduation
TO THE EDITOR: THE NORTHFIELD NEWS AS THE PARENT of a graduate, I was surprised to find that the Times-Argus covered every high school graduation in the area but Northfield’s in their Sunday paper on June 20th. This seemed odd to relatives who were visiting. As they left town we promised to send a copy of the Transcript, which would certainly have a nice article.
It was bewildering to find that the Transcript did not recognize the importance of what took place in the center of town on June 19th. About fifty young men and women and their friends and families celebrated the culmination of thirteen years of challenge and struggle and accomplishment. These precious leaders of the future represent millions of dollars invested by Northfield taxpayers in their future. I believe these citizens deserved a full report of this event. The Transcript failed to do this.
There were four student speakers who shared very important personal stories and lessons with their classmates and others present. Gratitude for community support for their journey was expressed, and we who listened could understand that high school is not “Easy Street.” The candid stories shared with courage about how students were able to find opportunity to discover their own unique talents and paths in pursuit of graduation were important. Once again, I wonder why our only local paper did not realize the importance of this event. Of course, we did see the photo display. It did not convey the story of this event. Is this not the fundamental mission of a newspaper?
Kierney Leonard and Emily Baraw each inspired me and made me reflect on how important courage and the encouragement of family, friends, and teachers are in clearing the right pathway for students who are determined to achieve. Nathaniel Macijeski spoke about overcoming fear and choosing friends who are supportive. John Triano, the valedictorian of the Northfield High School class of 2010, made light of his accomplishment but deserves recognition.
As a community, we can truly celebrate the accomplishments of all these graduates. I hope that each of them will carry an awareness of our respect as they gather courage and hope for the next steps in their life journeys.
