Foreign Game Shows Invade the USA

THERE’S A NEW 6-part series on the Travel Channel that may not be provide many unique travel tips, but it certainly offers an unique perspective on the kinds of game shows broadcast in other countries. Hosted by Todd Newton, the series is “World’s Wackiest Game Shows” – “Talk Soup” meets foreign game shows - with two original episodes airing Tuesday night (check your local listings and/or travelchannel.com for times and episode repeats). While popular U.S. game shows like “The Price Is Right” and “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” appear in many languages – “Le Juste Prix” in France and “Chi Vuol Essere Milionario?” in Italy respectively – you won’t find their lite brand of entertainment on “World’s Wackiest…” This series stays true to its title and features the bold, bawdy and beautiful of foreign games shows. If you want to appease your voyeuristic tendencies on what people are watching on their sofas or laptops across the pond and beyond, tune in; it’s fast, funny and foreign, as in strange.

WWGS spins the globe, landing in Brazil for some “Ba Ba Boom,” China’s “Man O Man”, “Dadagiri” from India, Norway’s “Big Class Reunion” and more from Argentina, Denmark, France, New Zealand, The Philippines, Spain, Sweden, Russia and the Ukraine. There are no clips from Japan; a smart creative choice, since the networks have americanized enough Japanese game shows to the point of overkill.

WWGS makes frequent stops in Italy. In a clip from “La Botola” (the trap door) an Italian mamma emotes loud as she faces off against a male belly dancer. The audience chooses the best performance and the results are revealed when “la botola” opens up and the loser falls into a swimming pool below. The Italians reveal their famous flair for fashion in a clip from “Il Grande Mercante in Fiera,” hosted by the renowned game show host/producer, Jocelyn Hattab. A contestant faces a line of men and women wearing white Tshirts; as the contestant hoses them down, letters underneath the now wet t-shirts spell out a word. In “In Sexy Car Wash,” scantily clad beauties give the winner and his car as good foamy scrubbing - wax not included.

In a few “what were they thinking?” clips, homeowners from Romania and Israel invite the show “Upgrade” into their homes. If questions are answered correctly, their appliances are upgraded; if answered incorrectly, as they often are, out goes the fridge, the TV and more. From “I Know What You Did Last Friday” (The Netherlands), a hypnotized contestant thinks his bank loan officers are naked. He later wakes up in the TV studio to watch how his day unfolded. In Germany’s smash hit “Wetten Dass,” a man singing opera becomes a human ramp for cars riding over his fierce sixpack. Mexico’s “Asgaard” takes place in mythical land with “Lord of the Rings” type-characters moving the game-play along for a contestant who must endure eyebrow waxing as his team member races against the clock to put together a puzzle.

Each WWGS episode wraps things up with a clip from “Distraction” with the dry yet hilarious host Jimmy Carr asking the questions as contestants use buzzers that will electrocute or are made of cacti, or must find the correct answer taped to a naked person with an unpleasing face or body, but usually both.

A viewer’s discretion advisory appears for adult situations and mature content.
