Historical Society Show
TO THE EDITOR: THE NORTHFIELD NEWS
I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made the opening of the Northfield Historical Society’s exhibit on Reuben McIntosh, 19th century Northfield photographer, on Thursday evening last a huge success! The biggest hit was the “Victorian portrait corner,” where many took the opportunity to have a digital photo taken of them in front of a wonderful wall mural, painted by Phyllis Greenway, by Isabel Weinger Nielsen. Isabel brought her printer and everyone got a copy of their picture. We hope to have Isabel return at least one more time (maybe twice?) to offer this same opportunity.
If you missed the opening, the regular exhibit hours are now in effect: Tuesday afternoons from 1:00-4:00 p.m., Thursday evenings from 6:00-8:00 p.m., and alternating Saturdays/Sundays. The hours and weekend dates are posted on the front door of the Paine House, and inside the lower level doors (Community Room entrance) of the library. The exhibit runs through Oct. 9. You can also find hours and updates for the Northfield Historical Society on its web site: sites.google.com/site/northfieldvthistoricalsociety.
Another special event will take place Sunday, August 8 (hours to be announced later). Tim Pinault, from Boston, will be in Northfield to demonstrate the 19th century process called “wet plate” or collodion photography. Labor intensive but interesting, this was used by photographers of that time to take the vintage pictures we see today. It will make you appreciate your digital camera even more!
Many people contributed to the creation of this exhibit, and the Society has published a brochure which lists their names and provides an overview of the show. Stop by during our open hours to pick one up and visit. We look forward to seeing you there!
