Setting the Record Straight

TO THE EDITOR: THE NORTHFIELD NEWS IAM WRITING to express the concern of the Northfield Board of Listers regarding an article in the July 8, 2010 Northfield News. That article penned by you and Kathleen Lott was rife with errors which I am endeavoring to correct below. In the interest of clarity and accuracy, I shall state verbatim what was stated in the article and answer each with the facts relating to each statement.

Statement 1: About $16 million will be coming off the grand list because of a computation error.

Answer: The amount being reduced from the grand list for the computation error (which was made in 2005 before the tenure of any of the present listers) is $272,000 not $16 million as stated in the article.

Statement 2: Trustee Chairman Douglas Lawson told the board last week that during a grievance meeting last month with the listers the error was discovered.

Answer: The error was not “discovered” during a grievance meeting last month with the listers. Rather, Mr. Lawson advised the listers he had come upon the “error” earlier in the day.

Statement 3: He (Lawson) also said that as a result of the grievance, the sewer lines and hydrants were removed from tax valuation and that decision was “based on State statute.”

Answer: Sewer lines were exempted from taxation pursuant to State statute before the village’s grievance. The hydrants were removed from taxation, also before the Village’s grievance of the water line taxation, as a result of their being connected with public safety.

The above is intended to clarify and to place in perspective the (erroneous) statements in the July 8th article. While this letter comes to the Northfield News from me as Chair of the Northfield Board of Listers, it is concurred in by both other listers, Richard Greenslit and Susan

Popowski.
