Aug. 22: Sunday at 8 p.m., “Nature” looks at rhinos and efforts to protect them. The rhinoceros is one of the planet’s rarest animals, with three species on the brink of extinction. The program also airs Monday at 9 p.m. on the VPT World channel.

At 9 p.m., “Masterpiece Mystery!” encores another of the Inspector Lewis stories. The murder of a small-time criminal leads Lewis and Hathaway to a prominent Oxford don. New Inspector Lewis stories begin next week.

Aug. 23: Monday at 7:30 p.m. on Vermont Public Television’s “Profile,” Fran Stoddard talks with Tanya Lee Stone of S. Burlington, Vt., author of nearly 90 books for young readers. “Profile” will also air Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 11:30 p.m. and is available on demand at www.vpt.org.

At 9 p.m., the sleuths on “History Detectives” continue their work. Among the stories: Tukufu Zuberi tallies the facts on a 1940s Jackie Robinson All- Stars scorecard. Black and white athletes played this game before Robinson became the first black major league baseball player. What role did it play in the integration of major league baseball?

At 10 p.m., “Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio” chronicles the late architect’s 1993 founding of a design-build program that worked for social change in impoverished Alabama communities.

Aug. 24: Tuesday at 8 p.m. “Nova: The Four-Winged Dinosaur” investigates mysterious feathered dinosaurs discovered in China that challenged ideas about the origin of bird flight. The program also airs Thursday at 8 p.m. on the VPT World channel.

At 9 p.m., the film series “POV” presents “Food Inc.,” Robert Kenner’s revealing look at the U.S. food industry and corporations that put profit before consumer health.

Aug. 25: Wednesday at 8 p.m., “Great Performances” takes viewers to the Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna for an open-air concert with the Vienna Philharmonic. Guest conductor Franz Welser-Most leads the orchestra in a program that includes Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in A-Major with soloist Yefim Bronfman.

At 9 p.m., the music continues with “The Cleveland Orchestra in Performance: Bruckner Symphony No. 7.” Music director Franz Welser-Most conducts a program that includes the Bruckner piece and the broadcast premiere of George Benjamin’s “Duet for Piano and Orchestra.”

At 10:30 p.m., “PBS Previews: Circus” gives viewers an advance look at a special coming this fall that goes behind the scenes at the Big Apple Circus.

Aug. 26: Thursday at 7:30 p.m., VPT will air “The AARP Vermont Governor’s Forum,” the first general election debate between the Democratic and Republican candidates for governor, as chosen two days earlier in the primary election. The debate will also be webcast on www.vpt.org. Moderator Steve Delaney will ask the candidates their views on health care, jobs, the economy, the state budget and transportation. Viewers may submit their questions in advance at connect@vpt.org. During the debate, there will be a live web chat on www.vpt.org with journalists Shay Totten of Seven Days and Anne Galloway of vtdigger.com.
