The Member-Guest tournament at the Northfield Country Club is considered the biggest event of the golfing season, and last weekend’s tournament lived up to expectations. There were terrific team efforts and some excellent golfing in the skills challenges competitions. Fifty - six players divided into 28 teams and four flights, took part in the 36 hole, best ball, two day event.
First place in the championship flight (and the overall championship) went to the team of Randy Miller and Mike Duquette with a gross score of 143.
“It was an excellent tournament. Denny Barney and the guys did a great job, The course was in great shape,” Randy Miller said.
Mike Duquette played high school golf for Northfield, winning a state title in 1978. He has kept his golfing skills sharp and they showed this weekend. “Mike played terrific golf this weekend. We weren’t originally set up as partners but we got put together and it worked out well,” said Randy.
Mike now lives in Connecticut but felt the trip back home was worth it.
“It’s always great to bet back. Playing in the tournament with Randy made it even better,” he said.
The first flight low net score (handicaps calculated) went to the father and son team of Scott and rob Higgins with a 127.
First flight honors went to Mike Moore and Jack Hoffman with a gross score of 145 while Bob Everingham while Dave Antoff shot the best net score of the first flight, a 117 (handicaps calculated).
The second flight crown went to Mark Greaves and Mike Gilbert who shot a154 gross score. Second flight net winners were the team of Andy Button and Steve Moran who shot a 127 net (handicaps calculated.
Picking up bragging rights in the third flight were Guy Teschmacher and Keith Robinson, who shot a gross score of 168. The third flight net winners were the father and son team of Tony and Jeremy Hedges with a net score of 113 (handicaps calculated).
Saturday’s skills challenge saw Bruce Wright take the longest drive competition with a drive of nearly 300 yards off the first tee. Bruce’s drive cleared the river, so although the drives weren’t individually measured it was easy to estimate the distance of Bruce’s drive.
The putting competition went to Bob Plastridge, who put a 60 foot putt 19” from the cup on the Northfield Country Club’s putting green.
