Northfield Police Report

August 11

8:32 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - The department was contacted by a concerned citizen. Earlier in the morning around 5 he had heard gunshots and thought they seemed too close to his house.

11:16 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance – A citizen of Vt RT 12a came to the police department. At the apartment building where the complainant resides were a father and son that appeared to have had a physical altercation. The officer responded to the scene and talked with all parties.

12:39 p.m. - Theft - An officer took a complaint of missing property from Cemetary Street. The caller advised that they were missing wheels for their vehicle. The officer responded. Under investigation.

3:56 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - A relative of a citizen in Northfield came to the department to report missing items. He is watching his brothers house and while checking on it today he notice a missing ladder and gun. He is not sure when the house would have been entered, nor does he have any information regarding the properties.

6:09 p.m. - Agency Assistance - Police responded to King Street for a report of a building exploding. When police and fire arrived, they discovered that a transfer switch had blown at the sub station and that is what was reported as burning and smoking. Police notified Green Mountain Power and no further action was taken.

7:26 p.m. - Citizen Assist - A complaint that the borrower of a bicycle had not returned the bike when promised. The officer looked for the accused but did not locate him. Later the owner of the bike called to advised he had his property back. No further action taken.

7:27 p.m. - Citizen Dispute - An officer was contacted by the subject who advised that she wanted an officer to assist her while she got the rest of her belongings from her parents residence. The officer arrived on scene to find the complainant waiting as her parents had started fighting with her. The officers was asked by the parents to serve Notice Against Trespass notices on all the extra people with their daughter. The daughter received her property.

11:22 p.m. - Agency Assistance – Police were requested by Berlin Police to assist them on a traffic stop at the intersections of Cox Brook road and Rte. 12 north. The two underage youths were in possession of two 30 packs of Natural Light beer. The operator of the vehicle was issued a citation for criminal possession of alcohol. The beer was seized by Berlin Pd.

August 12

12:25 a.m. - Citizen Assist - Police responded to assist the complainant with getting her boyfriend off the ground and into the residence. The complainant advised that he had collapsed in the driveway and was extremely intoxicated. The officer arrived, checked the subject for injuries which none were apparent and assisted him into the residence.

11:34 a.m. - Theft - The department was advised by the Highway department that a Road Closed sign attached to a barricade was missing from the Central Street project. The sign is to advised travelers that the road is closed so there will not be any vehicles damaged by hitting the construction site. If you know where this sign is, please return it.

12:08 p.m. - Juvenile Problem - A mother called for assistance. Her juvenile son had left the house and was going to walk to another state. The officer responded to the area and located the youth. He was given a ride to his mother.

3:13 p.m. - Theft - CW reported that her medication was stolen from her motor vehicle. CW provided a sworn written statement and requested that her vehicle be fingerprinted. The request was denied.

9:27 p.m. - Citizen Dispute - An officer responded to 25 VT Rte 12 A for a report of a fight. When the officer met with the offending subjects they reported that they were having a verbal discussion that had gotten too loud. The subjects agreed that there was too much emotional stress. One of the subjects was going to go to Washington County Mental Health for help as their child was very young with severe medical issues.

11:21 p.m. - Agency Assistance - An officer spoke with a caller that appeared to be very incoherent. The caller stated he was sick and needed medication. The officer asked him if he wanted an ambulance. The Northfield Ambulance was contacted and the officer stood by until the caller was transported. Washington County Mental Health was contacted to meet with the patient.

August 13

1:08 a.m. - DUI - Colby R. Philbrick, age 18 of

Northfield Vermont was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

12:24 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - The department was contacted by Norwich Security regarding a phone message received. The officer responded to the University and consulted with Security regarding the contents of the message. Under investigation.

6:57 p.m. - DUI - Keith Aten, 50, of Montpelier was arrested for DUI. Mr. Aten was taken into custody for DUI after a roadside test revealed he was almost 3 times the legal limit. An officer was in the South Village Mobil when he saw a clerk refuse a sale of alcohol to a customer. The officer asked why the sale was refused, and the clerk said the customer appeared way too intoxicated. The officer ran out into the parking lot with the intent of stopping the male before he could get in a car, but Mr. Aten was already in his car and driving out of the lot. The officer stopped Mr. Aten, and discovered he was intoxicated. He had a BAC of .224. He was processed, cited into court in early September and released to his wife.

7:10 p.m. - Citizen Dispute - An officer responded to the Falls Trailer Park regarding a neighbor dispute. The officer responded and talked with both parties. An arrangement by parents had been made and the children were now in

disagreement. The officer suggested that they talk with their parents upon their return and resolve the issue.

7:23 p.m. - Citizen Dispute - An officer responded to Hallstrom Road for the report of a citizen dispute. The caller advised that a family member had arrived at their residence and started being verbally abusive. The citizen

wanted to have the subject removed and a Notice Against Trespass was served.

10:29 p.m. - Phone Problem /Harassment - The complainant advised that he was receiving harassing phone calls from a block number. There was nothing threatening in the annoying phone calls. Under investigation.

August 14

4:15 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - The patrol officer discovered an open door. The owner of the building was notified.

10:38 a.m. - Theft - The department was advised of a burglary complaint from Wheeler Road. The officer was advised that a generator had been taken from the property. The complainant is the caretaker of the property. The owner of the property was contacted for the value of the missing item. Under investigation.

12:35 p.m. - Agency Assistance - A notice of hearing for Portland, Maine District Court was served. The completed paperwork was returned to Portland.

2:49 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance – An officer responded to Elm Street for a report of two suspicious individuals. I was told that a male and female had parked their vehicle at the top of Elm Street, walked down and behind the church and then walked into the woods behind Elm Street. The caller advised that their activity seemed suspicious. I canvassed the immediate and surrounding areas but I did not locate anyone fitting the description as provided to me via dispatch.

5 p.m. - Agency Assistance - The department was requested to respond with the ambulance service to assist with a patient who was uncooperative and acting unusual. The patient reportedly fell down a small flight of stairs and was acting unusual according to his caretakers. The officers observed the patient and assisted the ambulance service to transport for the patient's wellbeing.

August 15

12:15 a.m. - Noise Disturbance - Police received several complainants of the loud music coming from Bone Stock. The power in town had been turned off and the residence did not have any back ground noise to cover the music. Police responded to the Bone Stock Festival and told them to shut down the music. They complied. No further complaints were received.

1:17 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance – An officer was performing a business check at the Northfield Country Club when I located the concession stand in the middle of the fairway. The club owner was contacted and the property was secured.

8:13 a.m. - Citizen Dispute - An officer talked with a complainant in reference to an ongoing dispute. The caller advised that someone was leaving messages on Facebook that were annoying and rude. The Officer advised the caller to use the features of Facebook to block and report the offender.

10:46 a.m. - Assault - A female came to the police department. She was upset and crying advising she had been in a physical altercation with her husband. The officers took her statement and then met with her husband. Both parties were charged for an assault and the case is being reviewed by the State's Attorneys office.

7:10 p.m. - Burglary - An officer took a report of missing chainsaws. The complainant advised that they had been away for a short period of time and upon

return found an area that had been forced open and chainsaws were missing. Under investigation.

8:09 p.m. - 911 Hangup Call - The operator at E911 advised of a call from a local business regarding an automatic alarm call. The officer responded to the business building and found all the area secure. Key holder responded and determined that there was nothing needing attention.

10:33 a.m. - Litter/Pollution/Public Health - One of the town employees reported that he had found several bags of personal items at the dugout on the baseball field in Northfield Falls. He had brought the bags of items to the police department. One of the

bags had several items of mail. The officer contacted the name on the mail and the owner came to claim the personal belongings. The property had been left at the field unbeknownst to the owner who was happy to recover it.

August 16

5:45 p.m. - Citizen Assist - A citizen of Northfield came to the department looking for assistance. The complainant advised that they had been kicked out of the residence without any personal property or money. The officer made a

phone call to the spouse at the residence who agreed that the complainant could go back to get clothes and other personal items.

7 p.m. - Noise Disturbance - An officer responded to a report of a disturbance on Pleasant Street in Northfield. Upon arrival, no disturbance found, the witnesses stated that a men and a woman were yelling at each other but had left the area in a vehicle.

10:30 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - An officer responded to a report of suspicious activities in the Falls trailer park. Officer was informed of suspicious traffic of vehicles at a specific residence. Information collected. Under investigation.

August 17

2:10 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - A report that juveniles at Cumberland Farms reported to an off duty officer that an individual was acting suspicious. The suspicious individual was making threats and being very vocal about the different police departments and certain officers.

11:04 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - The complainant advised that she had been threatened on Facebook. The officer requested a statement from the complainant and a printed copy of the messages. The officer also advised the complainant on using Facebook's feature for privacy and blocking unwanted correspondence.

7:35 p.m. - Threatening - An officer received a report that children playing on a common area near Northview Drive in Northfield, were approached by the owner of the adjacent property and summoned to stay clear of some apple trees. A parent was concern of the way the individual approached the kids. Officer went to the area to contact the individual but he was unable to reach him.
