Photo by Rob Wills, The Northfield News Green Mountain Family Practice has welcomed Dr. Sarah Davies as the newest physician on staff. Sarah currently lives in Waterbury with her golden retriever puppy, Ivy. As an avid skier, she wants to be close to the slopes at Stowe.

Dr. Davies, a Phi Beta Kappa graduate from John Hopkins University as an undergraduate and received her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine.

During 2008 and 2009, she was chief resident at the University of Vermont Family Residency Program at Fletcher Allen Health Care and carries many honors and awards.

Among these incliude Family Medicine Interest Group Leadership Award, the Alexander K. Barton Cup and the Dorothy F. Sheppard Award as outstanding resident advisor at Johns Hopkins Univerity in 1999.

Dr. Davies said that when she was young, she first wanted to get into veterinary medicine. “ I really liked the health aspect of it. I began being allergic to cats and I later deiced the small animal thing was not for me so I explored the health care field and looked at different positions in the health care field. I took an undergraduate course at John Hopkings University with the idea in mind of eventually getting into medical school,” she said.

“I want to practice family medicine because I grew up in a really small town in Pennsylvania and I just like the idea of the small town doctor that can see the whole family and take care of someone from birth till death and to be part of that process.”

She said that she came to Vermont to do her residency for the outdoor activities and decided to stay. “I wanted to be in a town and train where family medicine is highly respected, “she said.

“As you know, UVM has received awards for their primary care training and the people and residency there were great. I came up to Vermont for residency in Burlington. Then looking for places to go where people, I could have gone anywhere in the country and I really like Vermont so I looked at places around here. What I like about Northfield, it is a small community similar to where I grew up. I like the fact the university is here. I like the student-age population. I like sports medicine a lot and also women’s health. So all those combinations I think I will get in this practice here. This is exactly where I want to be, where I envisioned myself when I went to medical school. “
