Police Report
September 22
10:10 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance – An officer was requested to meet with Norwich Security regarding a suspicious bag that they had found on campus. The officer met with the Chief of security and took possession of the bag. It has been placed in a secured file until the owner calls to retrieve it.
10:57 a.m. - Citizen Assist - While on patrol in the area of Pleasant street heard a subject call out for me. Had a hard time finding anyone until he said look up here. Seems the older gentleman at Pleasant street had been doing some chimney work replacing the liner and had no problem getting onto the roof but needed help getting off. Highway department employees came over with a ladder and helped him get off the roof.
1:03 p.m. - Citizen Assist - A citizen of Union Street advised the officer that she had paid on her rent to the end of the month and was in the process of moving out. Her landlord was changing the locks and moving her stuff out. The officer advised the caller that the landlord could not do that. Later the landlord requested a Notice against Trespass, the officer advised him that the issue was civil and the tenant needed to be able to get her property.
2:11 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - I was made aware of a female subject in a red sweater who was walking in the roadway on union Street headed into the village. Responded and found a female matching the description, spoke with her briefly and advised her that some people were concerned about her and the fact that she had been walking in the roadway. Advised the subject that she needed to use the side walks and pointed them out to her. Officer ensure she arrived at her home.
6:06 p.m. - MV Complaint - The department received a report of a motor vehicle that had almost hit another vehicle and pedestrian. Caller gave the plate information. Under investigation.
10:29 p.m. - Accident PD - An officer responded to a 1 car motor vehicle crash on West Hill Rd. Vehicle had been driven off the road and hit some trees. Operator was traveling up West Hill Rd, failed to negotiate the curve and went into some trees causing extreme damage to her vehicle. She was not injured Vermont Crash form completed.
September 23
7:39 a.m. - Agency Assistance - Assisted the Fire Department with traffic control at fire scene. Assisted by Berlin PD prior to my arrival to the scene as well as Northfield Ambulance.
8:22 a.m. - Accident PD - An officer was advised of a motorcycle/car crash in the area of the fire scene on VT RT 12 N. Upon arrival to the area the officer spoke with the owner of the motorcycle who advised that he had no damage to his bike and was not aware of anyone hitting the bike. The operator of the vehicle advised that the passenger side mirror was damaged and she had no idea what she had hit in the area. Everyone heard a noise, but no one saw a crash.
Noon - Suspicious Person/Circumstance - I was requested to respond to the Campus of Norwich University and meet with the Director of Security as well as Staff from the Commandants Office who were investigating why a NU student became very sick and needed to be transported to the hospital for emergency care.
5:47 p.m. - Unlawful Mischief - The complainant called to report that her daughter's vehicle had been damaged while parked at Dog Wood Glen. Under investigation.
6:37 p.m. - Theft - An officer received a report from a citizen of Northfield Falls that was missing prescription drugs. The officer is
investigating.
7:45 p.m. - Citizen Dispute - The department received a complaint of a citizens dispute on Pleasant Street. The officer responded and spoke with the complainant and witnesses. Under investigation.
11:01 p.m. - Noise Disturbance - This officer responded to the area of Rt. 12 and Lovers Lane and was unable to locate any noise.
September 24
10:31 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance – An officer spoke with a citizen concerning a conversation regarding a possible violation of conditions of release. Under investigation.
2:14 p.m. - Theft - A citizen of Jefferson Avenue came to the police department to report some items missing from his garage. The officer took the statement and then went to the property to investigate.
3:46 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - A citizen came to the police department to discuss a situation that was suspicious. It was determined that the incident/activity was in Berlin and the citizen was referred to the Berlin Police Department.
6:37 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - The department was advised of a illegal burn at Dogwood Apartments. The officers arrived and confirmed that there was an outdoor fire. The fire warden was contacted and informed of the activity. Nothing further by the police needed.
September 25
12:03 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Officers were dispatched to Western Avenue for suspicious activity. Under investigation.
1:11 a.m. - Noise Disturbance - Police were dispatched to a noise complaint on South Main Street. It was a very hot night and tenants were gathered outside chatting and listening to music. They were cautioned about the late hour and noise level, and very cooperatively moved back inside. No further action necessary.
2:43 a.m. - DUI - Police arrested Daniel R. Donais, age 20, of Fairfax Station, Virginia for Driving while Under the Influence. Officers observed a grey Ford Mustang rapidly accelerate off Wall Street onto Central Street. The vehicle exceeded the posted speed limit and spun its tires.
10:08 a.m. - Citizen Assist - Police served as a collection site for a Drug Enforcement Administration Drug/Pill drop. The department received prescription drug contributions from a number of citizens.
3:14 p.m. - Assault - I was advised by dispatch of a late reported domestic assault incident. The complainant advised she was going to come to the Northfield Police Department to document her
complaint.
5:59 p.m. - Accident PD - Police arrested William B. Miller, age 53, of Northfield, Vermont for Leaving the Scene of an Accident. Officers were called to Grand Union parking lot after a vehicle, later found to have been operated by Miller, struck an unoccupied parked vehicle.
September 26
12:33 a.m. - Noise Disturbance - Officers were dispatched to a noise complaint on Western Avenue. One of the tenants was celebrating his 21st birthday and the party got out of control. Samuel C. Armus, 20, of Franksville, WI was arrested for driving under the influence. Those underage who were drinking were issued paperwork to participate in the Teen Alcohol Safety Program. The tenants were given a warning for noise disturbance, and told any return visits for the balance of the
12:51 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - The department was contacted by a concerned citizen about suspicious activity at Memorial Park. The officer responded to the area and spoke with complainant and then with a male walking his dog. The officer did not observe any criminal activity.
5:25 p.m. - Citizen Assist - Officers responded to a residence in Northfield Falls for a female that was despondent. Officers spent time talking with her before finding a family member who would stay with her for the evening. Advice was given on methods to follow up to ensure continued care was accessible.
6:18 p.m. - Juvenile Problem - The complainant called the police to report her son as a runaway. The 17 year old was reportedly with a friend and the father was aware of the situation.
7:09 p.m. - Alcohol Offense - An officer on patrol observed a group of males on Central Street. As he approached the group, the people all took off running towards campus. Other officers responded and were able to locate several members of the group. Several members of the group were issued referrals to the Washington County Teen Alcohol Safety Program.
8:35 p.m. - Family Fight/Domestic - An officer was dispatched to a report of a family fight. The officer responded and listened to both parties. Under investigation.
8:43 p.m. - MV Complaint - An officer was advised of a motor vehicle complaint on North Main Street. The officer responded to the area and received information from a witness. The operator of the vehicle reportedly accelerated quickly when leaving the area and almost hit a person walking. The officer will attempt to locate the operator and investigate the accusation.
September 27
4:44 p.m. - Unlawful Mischief - I responded to the band room at Norwich University for a report of a vandalism to a trumpet belonging to a student. I was told that the trumpet had been broken, and then super glued back together.
6 p.m. - Runaway Juvenile - Officers were advised of a reported runaway. The parent gave the last known information and the officers made contact with the young female later in the evening. At last report she was spending the night with friends.
6:11 p.m. - MV Complaint - An officer received a motor vehicle complaint of a vehicle not stopping at a stop sign and almost hitting the complainant. Under investigation.
9:34 p.m. - Agency Assistance - I assisted a detective with the Vermont State Police who were searching for a resident of Northfield. I assisted the detective in locating the person. Once located, assisted the detective at the police station while she interviewed the person in a case he was involved in.
September 28
2:31 p.m. - Property Damage, Non Vandalism - This officer responded to a complaint in reference to a tree falling on a motor vehicle. Upon arrival observed two vehicle with damage due to a tree limb falling following a gust of wind.
4:29 p.m. - MV Complaint - The department received a complaint regarding a motor vehicle on South Main Street near Overlook Drive.
7:17 p.m. - MV Complaint - I was dispatched to the report of a motor vehicle complaint on Vermont Rout 12A near the train trestle located near the Northfield town line with Roxbury. Dispatch advised the complainant stated she had almost been struck by an 18-wheeler near the train trestle and as a result the trucks load had tipped off of the truck and onto the side of the road. Officer responded but found no evidence of report. No one was in the area.
