Police Report
January 25
7:40 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance – An officer responded to Old Mill Hill for a report of suspicious activity. It was reported that there was activity at an abandoned residence, and believed that someone had been to the residence recently. Upon checking the area we did not see any fresh footprints in the snow in or around the residence. A check of the inside of the residence did not yield contact with anyone.
12:06 p.m. - Citizen Assist - An officer responded to assist with a condition of a temporary restraining order (TRO). The plaintiff of the TRO needed to collect property from the residence and the defendant. The items were collected from within the residence and placed on the front porch, where the plaintiff collected the items. Nothing further.
3:54 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance – The department noticed that a defendant had failed to check in over the weekend. A call to the court was made to see if the defendant was in custody or in violation. The court advised that all existing criminal cases had been closed and the defendant would no longer have conditions to check in at Northfield Police Department.
5:56 p.m. - Citizen Assist - An officer received a call regarding a car that had been towed. The officer went to the apartment building but was unable to locate the caller as the address was not taken correctly. The next day the complainant called again and was able to speak directly with another officer. The towing issue was a civil matter with the landlord and the tenant. All was resolved satisfactorily with all parties.
January 26
1:33 p.m. Animal Problem - An officer responded to an animal problem on Northview Drive. I was advised that a neighbors dog was running loose and at large. The complainant advised that the dog had been running loose on his yard, and had gotten into his trash. I met with the owner of the dog at his residence and warned him about the ordinance relating to animals running at large.
4:20 p.m. - Burglary - An officer responded to a report of a burglary. The caretaker for the residence reported that copper piping had been stolen from the basement. Under investigation.
6:38 p.m. - Custodial Interference - The department was advised that an ex partner was keeping the complainant from seeing their child for a court ordered visitation. The complainant further advised that he did not want any action taken beyond the filing of the incident at this time. Complainant came to the Police Department and provided us with a copy of the court order as well as filed a sworn statement detailing the events.
January 27
10:15 a.m. - MV Complaint - At approximately 9:30 a.m. hours, an officer was on his way to work at the Northfield Police Department when he observed a black sedan parked partially in the roadway in the area of Norwich university. When I went on duty and returned to where the vehicle was it was GOA.
11:15 a.m. - Animal Problem - The department was contacted regarding animals running at large on King Street. The officer responded to the area and observed the dogs in the middle of King Street running loose. The dogs ran back to their own residence as the officer followed them in the cruiser. The owner of the dogs was home and advised of the violation.
12:05 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - The daughter of a resident called to report a suspicious situation. The caller’s mother had received a phone call claiming that she would be the recipient of an award. A check of the incoming number showed it was from Jamaica, but there was no other information. The officer contacted another resource and confirmed that this was a scam. The department is requesting that no one give out personal information over the phone.
10:37 p.m. - Citizen Dispute - Officers were dispatched to the report of a physical altercation at a local business. The incident is still under investigation.
11:55 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police arrested Daniel C. Hendy, age 24, of Northfield, Vermont for Violation his probation conditions and Unlawful Trespass.
January 29
12:57 a.m. - Agency Assistance - An officer was requested to respond to the top of Route 64 at the I-89 on ramp to provide assistance to an Orange County Sheriffs Deputy out screening a possible DUI. The officer stood by while the deputy did what he needed and no further action was required.
6:38 p.m. - Theft - An officer was contacted about a theft of alcohol from a local convenience store. The incident remains under investigation.
January 30
2:09 a.m. - Parking Problem - Officers observed a vehicle in violation of Winter Ban Parking and due to the weather conditions had it towed, so it would not block highway departments efforts to keep are roads clear and safe.
10:25 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance – The department was contacted regarding suspicious activity that was happening during the call. The officers responded to the area but could not locate the activity.
11 a.m. - Suspicious Person/Circumstance - In this matter a person came to the police department to speak with an officer concerning a possible scam.
