Wilkins Harley Celebrating 67th
Wilkins Harley-Davidson in South Barre is celebrawting their 67th birthday on January 28, 2014 at 1 p.m. at 663 South Barre Road. January 28th marks the dealership's 67th year anniversary of its founding by Harry J. Wilkins. After serving in Guam as a B-29 mechanic in the U.S. Army, Harry was approved for a Harley-Davidson dealership on January 28, 1947 – the birth of Wilkins Harley-Davidson. The dealership began in a garage on Merchant Street in Barre at Harry's mother's home. Eventually, the dealership moved to Farwell Street, also in Barre, when Harry married Barbara Corey. In 1995, the dealership moved to its current location at 663 South Barre Road. Recently, the dealership underwent a remodel yet the façade of the building remains outlined with Barre Granite – a tribute to Harry's earlier work in the granite quarries.
Wilkins Harley-Davidson's customer list is long with each customer welcomed into the Wilkins family. "Reminiscing with long-time customers and meeting our new customers is the highlight of my week", says Barbara Wilkins – Harry's wife and owner. Barbara, now 85, can be found at the dealership most every Tuesday and Saturday.
Harry and Barbara's children – twins Alan and Ann – joined the dealership in 1979 and 1980 respectfully. Alan worked at the dealership until his passing in 2002 of leukemia and will be honored this year with a bone marrow drive. Ann, the Dealer Principal, continues to play an active role in the success of the dealership - "We've seen a lot of growth and change over the years and the one thing that remains constant is our commitment to our customers and our sense of family".
2004 saw the addition of the third generation of Wilkins – Harry and Barbara's grandson and Ann's son, John. John, owner and General Manager, manages the day-to-day operations of the family grown business. "We take pride in our dealership and strive to provide outstanding customer service. The anniversary of the dealership means a lot to us. It's a time for us to honor the hard work of Harry and Alan whose pictures hang in the showroom. It is also a time for us to celebrate our customers. We invite everyone to stop by the dealership on the 28that 1 p.m. and join in the celebration".
