Both 4-H working steer shows took place at the Connecticut Valley Fair fairgrounds in Bradford. The first was July 16, held in conjunction with the Connecticut Valley Fair. The second was July 22. A third show is scheduled for Aug. 13, place to be determined.

Eligibility for Eastern States in West Springfield, Massachusetts, is based on the individual's overall point accumulation from a minimum of two shows. They must participate in all three classes at these shows and submit both their 4-H working steer project record book and 4-H member record book for evaluation in advance of the third show.

In the first of these classes, fitting and showing, the judge evaluates the exhibitors on their personal appearance and the condition, cleanliness and grooming of their team. The judge also takes into consideration how well they drove their team and their general knowledge of working steers.

The teamsters are judged on their ability to hitch up their team to a two-wheeled cart and maneuver it through a series of obstacles in the cart class, a timed event. In the stone boat pull, another timed event, they are evaluated on how well their team responds to basic commands to pull a stone boat, a type of sled for moving heavy objects.

Judging the first show was Dan Fantoni from Fairfax, a former Vermont 4-H'er in the working steer project. Mike Courser from Warner, New Hampshire, was the judge for the second show.

Although two 4-H'ers from New Hampshire 4-H clubs participated in the July 16 show, they competed only for ribbons as they are not eligible to represent Vermont at Eastern States. Winners from that show are:
