News from the Hill

Beginning Oct. 19, Norwich University's WNUB-FM is counting
down to its 50th anniversary, which will be celebrated on Friday,
December 8, from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the Wise Campus Center. The
Northfield and surrounding community is cordially invited to join us
for the reception, prizes, and live broadcast by Northfield's very own
Dex Rowe!
The public is also encouraged to listen to WNUB-FM in the greater
Northfield area at 88.3, via the RadioFX app, or to livestream it at:
libarts.norwich.edu/WNUBstream<http://icecast.norwich.edu:800
0/wnub.mp3>/. Each day until December 8, WNUB will air historical
world, national, Norwich, and music facts as part of Dex Rowe's
50-day countdown.
The station, led by then-general manager Leo P. Soucy, joined the
Intercollegiate Broadcasting System and the National Association of
Educational Broadcasting in 1967 and began operating on Dec. 8 of
that year. The station currently airs programming continuously,
24/7, and offers a dozen or so mostly evening live radio shows with
hosts. Today, depending on the semester, 12-25 students participate
in running the station as part of Norwich's Bachelor of Science in
Communications.
Over the years, WNUB-FM has expanded its programming to
reflect its burgeoning philosophy of reaching beyond the campus
and into the local community with programs such as weekly news
and sports updates from the Northfield News and public affairs programming
including Norwich Odyssey, the Norwich Writers' Series,
and interviews with all five of the 2016 Vermont gubernatorial candidates.
Other changes have included significant additions to the music
playlist and additional special event broadcasts such as coverage of
Town Meeting and all three days of Northfield's Labor Day weekend
celebration - the state's largest - airing continuous coverage from the
stage for 10 hours that Saturday and Sunday and three hours
Monday afternoon.
