Michael J. Abascal, 73, Earned Purple Heart

Michael J. Abascal, 73, died Saturday, February 24, 2018 at his home in Northfield. He was born in Northfield, May 31, 1944, the son of Joseph & Evelyn (Maloney) Abascal. He is a graduate of Northfield High School, class of 1963.
He was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War, having received a Purple Heart during his deployment.
He married Sandra D. Hedges on August 10, 1968 at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church in Northfield.
Michael had worked in construction, H&A Painting of Northfield, the Town of Northfield, Northfield Savings Bank, operated his own plowing business and for IBM in Essex for many years, prior to his retirement.
He was a member of St. John The Evangelist Church, Sorrell Maynard American Legion Post and the VFW, both of Northfield. He was a sports enthusiast, loved watching the Green Bay Packers, Boston Red Sox, NASCAR’s Jimmy Johnson and Norwich University Hockey. He also enjoyed playing golf, riding his bike, motorcycles and walking.
Survivors include his loving wife, Sandra Abascal of Northfield; many special sister in-laws and brother in-laws, as well as, nieces, nephews and cousins.
There are no calling hours.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, May 4 at 10 am at St. John The Evangelist Church on Vine Street in Northfield, followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northfield Senior Center, 168 Wall Street, Northfield, VT 05663. Kingston Funeral Home in Northfield is handling the arrangements.
