United Way Donation Drive Underway

Barre, Newport, and St. Johnsbury, Vermont –  Since January 1st, 2018 Green Mountain United Way through their Tatum’s Totes partnership has given 30 backpacks fully stocked with items children and their foster families need to transition into foster care. For each backpack there is a child’s life who is changing dramatically. These backpacks help to foster a sense of love, trust, and kindness to help give children something of their own as they move into a new situation.
Green Mountain United Way and Tatum’s Totes partnership serves the Barre, Newport, and St. Johnsbury Department for Children and Families districts.
In order to stock those backpacks with items for children from ages 0 -17, Green Mountain United Way relies on donations from the community. The support for this program has been incredible and they are now seeking items to replenish their stock.
“We enjoy knowing that we make a difference in the lives of our youth. We feel blessed to be a part of Tatum’s Totes.,” said Joni Verchereau, Tatum’s Totes supporter with the First Congregational Church of Berlin.
“Last year we were able to provide nearly 80 backpacks to children in our communities. This year we expect that number to increase. The item of the month drive allows us to customize the backpacks to respond to the needs of the family, whether the bag is for a baby girl or a 14-year-old boy.”, said Pam Bailey, Director of Programs and Operations at Green Mountain United Way.
In May, Green Mountain United Way is seeking water bottles for all ages. Examples include sippy cups with lids and handles, small plastic water bottles for little hands, hard plastic spill-proof bottles for older kids and teens, or thermoses and travel mugs. There is a special need for water bottles or sippy cups for ages 2-5, both boys and girls.
In addition to the item of the month, Green Mountain United Way is low on Hygiene Items for ages 2-7 (like tear-free shampoo/conditioner, etc.), Jumbo Crayons for little hands, Pens, Markers, Pencils, Flashcards for all ages.
